One of the most important aspects of working with the scientific method is being able to identify the independent(IV) and dependent variables(DV) in an experiment. It is important that an experiment only has one independent variable which will affect 1 other thing which will be the dependent variable.
The Standard/Essential Learnings regarding the Scientific Method are:
Students will list and describe the 6 steps of the Scientific Method.
Students will be able to identify the Independent and Dependent Variables in an experiment.
Students will measure accurately measure distance using appropriate measures
Students will graph their scientific data to include the following:
- Title written as the Effect of the IV on the DV;
- IV labeling the x axis;
- DV labeling the y axis and the unit of measurement used;
- Appropriate increments must also be used.
While the second standard is the one most learned with this lesson, IV and DV are also used in graphing(4) and in many steps of the scientific method(1) It really isn't possible to complete a scientific method writeup without being able to first identify the IV and DV.
